GLADE/FS1 is retiring in February—here’s how to relocate your data

December 20, 2023

Like Cheyenne, the GLADE FS1 subsystem has reached end-of-life. It will be retired in February 2024, and all data must be relocated by the end of January. (See below for details on how to do that.)

The hardware storage subsystem serves the file spaces /glade/p/ and /glade/collections. For the past several months, NCAR/CISL has been dispositioning and relocating existing data.

What are the next steps?

All users should evaluate how they wish to disposition any remaining Cheyenne scratch data, and do so by the end of January 2024.

NCAR Labs should continue with migrations from /glade/p to /glade/campaign, with the intent of working autonomously from /glade/campaign by the end of January 2024.

How do I migrate the data?

The details of the migrations depend on file space:

  • /glade/work, /glade/u/home:
    • These file spaces are shared between all HPC resources and have already been migrated off of GLADE/FS1. No user action is required.

  • /glade/p/:
    • NCAR Labs: In conjunction with each Lab’s Storage Advisors’ Group  representative, the NCAR Labs are each responsible for cleaning out old data and migrating from GLADE/FS1 to GLADE/Campaign Storage.

  • University Spaces: As described here, CISL staff are synchronizing data between GLADE/FS1 and GLADE/Campaign Storage, with a final transition planned early 2024 during a maintenance outage.

  • Cheyenne Scratch:
    • Cheyenne’s scratch filesystem will be permanently retired at the end of February 2024.

  • No attempt is made to automatically transfer Cheyenne Scratch contents, as scratch storage is intended to be temporary and tied to specific job workflows. (Users interested in duplicating contents between systems on their own may follow instructions here.)
