Join a talk about Arctic forecasting systems—refreshments served for in-person guests

May 8, 2026

On Thursday, May 21 from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm MT, join the Mesoscale and Microscale Meteorology Laboratory (MMM) at NSF NCAR for a presentation on regional modeling. The talk is entitled, “Development of the UFS-Arctic: A Unified Forecast System Pan-Arctic Research Capability.”

Kristin Barton, Christopher Cox, and Lisa Bengtsson will discuss NOAA Physical Sciences Laboratory (PSL) efforts to develop short- to medium-range forecasts. The team will present upgrades like refined atmospheric grid resolution and a new 0.08° Arctic cap. This Unified Forecast System (UFS) research capability examines atmosphere, ocean, and sea ice interactions. The seminar covers model configurations and physics parameterizations tailored for polar environments.

This hybrid event is held at the NCAR-Foothills Laboratory at 3450 Mitchell Lane, room FL2-1022 (the Large Auditorium). For in-person guests, refreshments are served at 1:45 pm MT, and the session concludes with a discussion ending at 3:30 pm MT. Remote participants can join via the live webcast and submit questions through Slido.
