Join a hybrid seminar about tropical cyclone development, with refreshments for in-person guests

September 8, 2025

On Thursday, September 11, at 2:00 pm MT, join the Mesoscale and Microscale Meteorology Laboratory (MMM) at NSF NCAR for a seminar with Dr. Jacob Carstens, an assistant professor at the University of North Dakota. The talk is entitled "Tropical Cyclone Response to Vertical Wind Shear in High-Resolution Climate Model Ensembles."

Most tropical cyclones fail to reach their maximum potential intensity because of various environmental factors. Vertical wind shear, in particular, is an important negative influence on tropical cyclone development. The presentation will discuss how uncertain projections of future vertical wind shear are a leading-order cause of the spread in projected tropical cyclone activity among climate models.

The seminar is hybrid and will be held in-person at the NCAR-Foothills Laboratory at 3450 Mitchell Lane, room FL2-1001, the small seminar auditorium. The talk can also be watched as a live webcast, and participants may ask questions via Slido. For in-person guests, refreshments will be served starting at 1:45 pm MT.
