On Wednesday, June 4, 2025, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm MT, join the NSF NCAR Explorer Series for a
seminar entitled "A frozen sea in flux: Understanding changing Arctic Ocean ecosystems through art and science." This event will feature scientist Courtney Payne from the Climate and Global Dynamics Laboratory (CGD) at NSF NCAR, and artist Anna Lindemann from the University of Connecticut.
Phytoplankton, microscopic plants in the world's oceans, produce half of the oxygen we breathe and form the foundation of marine food webs in Arctic ecosystems. With sea ice melting and ocean temperatures rising, this seminar will address the potential impacts on phytoplankton and the organisms that depend on them. Anna Lindemann, an "Evo Devo Artist" whose work explores evolutionary developmental biology (evo devo), will discuss the creation of "Arctic Shifts," an animation recently launched at the NSF NCAR Mesa Lab visitor center. Dr. Courtney Payne, a postdoc at the University of Colorado Boulder and NSF NCAR, will discuss the science behind the animation.
This is a free public event for ages 12 and up.
Register here for free. Participants can join in person at the NSF NCAR Mesa Lab in the Main Seminar Room, or watch the live public broadcast
online, where questions will be accepted via the Slido interface.
