Join a free hybrid lecture on aircraft de-icing and winter flight safety

March 12, 2025

On Wednesday, March 26, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm MT, join the lecture, “There’s something on the wing … something green,” with scientist Scott Landolt.

While it may sound straight out of an episode of The Twilight Zone, spraying a green- or orange-colored fluid onto the wings and other parts of an aircraft is an ordinary occurrence during winter weather conditions to de-ice aircraft before takeoff. But what is the purpose of these fluids, how do they work, and how do they contribute to safety? NSF NCAR scientists have been conducting research with support from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for many years. In this lecture, NSF NCAR scientist Scott Landolt will provide insights into the science behind these fluids.

This is a free public event for ages 12-plus, and is part of the NSF NCAR Explorer Series. For those joining in-person, the event will take place at NSF NCAR’s Mesa Lab in the main seminar room. For those joining online, watch the live public broadcast here, and ask questions following the lecture using the Slido interface.
