On Tuesday, October 27, at 11:00 am MT, join presenter Nick Cote for the
next session of the GDEX Discovery Series, apparition edition! The talk is entitled "Keeping the Lights On: How CIRRUS Runs GDEX, and Could Run Your Science Too."
About the talk: Have you ever wondered what keeps GDEX running, even when the lights go out? Since 2025, GDEX has run on
CIRRUS, NSF NCAR's on-premise cloud platform. In this GDEX Discovery Series talk, we'll follow how GDEX's hosting has evolved over time, from a physical server to a virtual machine, to containers, and ultimately Kubernetes, along with the pros and cons of each. If we just lost you at virtual machine, container, and Kubernetes, don't worry! Kubernetes may sound exotic, but it has become the industry standard for running applications that need to scale or stay available around the clock. We'll explain each platform in plain language, so you'll leave understanding the core ideas and how CIRRUS can complement your science.

About the series: The
GDEX Discovery Series is held on a monthly basis. It is open to everyone, including both internal team members and external community partners. After a quick, five-minute introductory GDEX overview, we will cover our main 15-minute topic of the month. The remainder of the hour is completely driven by you. We welcome all of your questions, feedback, and future suggestions. If the Q&A wraps up early, we will transition into a live demonstration and example walkthrough, with optional breakout rooms available for deeper side conversations.
