In-person NoBo Library event for ages 12-plus: Space shadows and Antarctic science

June 15, 2026

On Saturday, June 27, from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm MT, join the High Altitude Observatory (HAO) for an upcoming Explorer Series lecture. The talk is entitled "When a Shadow Passes Over Earth: What a Solar Eclipse in Antarctica Teaches Us About Space." NSF NCAR scientist Jonas Yu Hong will serve as the featured presenter for this event.

Dr. Hong will discuss the far-reaching effects of the 2021 Antarctic solar eclipse, focusing on how a total solar eclipse can drastically alter Earth's geospace and disrupt satellite communications and GPS navigation. The presentation will cover how advanced supercomputer simulations map these sudden space weather disruptions to better protect global technological infrastructure.

This educational event is free, open to the public, and recommended for ages 12 and older. It will be held entirely in person at the NoBo Library, located at 4500 13th Street in Boulder, Colorado. Attendees can find the presentation inside the Community Room on the second floor of the facility.

Interested participants are encouraged to register online in advance to reserve a seat. For more information, please view the event web page, contact the NSF NCAR Explorers team, or visit the official Explorer Series web page.
