NSF NCAR's new
CIRRUS platform (Cloud Infrastructure for Remote Research, Universities, and Scientists) is an innovative on-prem cloud platform that advances Earth system science research. Built on developer-friendly, Kubernetes-based technology, CIRRUS accelerates development by enabling researchers to deploy applications and host services.
The platform's first major tangible achievement is hosting the
GDEX (Geoscience Data Exchange) data commons, providing faster, more reliable service and establishing the foundation for future AI capabilities. This enhanced infrastructure automates development workflows, dramatically reducing environment setup/update time, allowing developers to focus on code, and ultimately enhancing scientific discovery.
