CISL is now accepting allocation requests from university-based researchers for the new Derecho system as well as the Casper data analysis and visualization cluster. Those requests are due March 13. Researchers can also request Cheyenne allocations in order to complete their work on that system before it is decommissioned in December 2023.
At the CISL HPC Allocations Panel (CHAP) spring 2023 meeting, CISL will allocate up to 400 million core-hours and 450,000 GPU-hours on the Derecho system, up to 115 million core-hours on Cheyenne, and up to 3 PB of Campaign Storage space. Because Cheyenne will be decommissioned later this year, all new projects should plan to use Derecho for their work. Requests for Cheyenne core-hours must indicate how the additional allocation is necessary to complete work that is already underway on Cheyenne or be limited to work that can be completed by the end of 2023. CISL accepts requests from university researchers for large-scale allocations every six months.
Researchers are encouraged to
review these instructions before preparing their allocation requests. The instructions include guidance on estimating Derecho core-hour and GPU-hour amounts prior to that system becoming generally available.
In addition to requesting computing allocations, university projects can request long-term space on the NCAR Campaign Storage resource. Campaign Storage has no default minimum amount; users are asked to justify the amount requested. The CHAP continues to closely scrutinize data management plans and storage requests, especially when proposals request a substantial portion of the storage capacity available to allocate.
