Schedule set for large-scale university allocation requests

July 12, 2022

University-based researchers can submit large-scale requests for Cheyenne allocations from August 1 through September 12. Due to the most recent delay in the schedule for delivery of the new Derecho supercomputer, we will only be considering requests for Cheyenne core-hours this fall.

Large-scale Cheyenne requests are for more than 400,000 core-hours. In addition to requesting computing allocations, university projects can request long-term space on the NCAR Campaign Storage resource. Campaign Storage has no default minimum amount; users are asked to justify the amount requested. Researchers are encouraged to review this information before preparing their allocation requests:

CISL accepts large-scale allocation requests from university researchers every six months for review by the CISL HPC Allocations Panel (CHAP). At the fall 2022 CHAP meeting, CISL will allocate up to 175 million core-hours on Cheyenne, up to 3 PB of Campaign Storage space, and no GLADE project space.

We now anticipate accepting allocation requests for Derecho beginning in March 2023. Cheyenne is expected to remain in operation through approximately September 2023, and researchers will be given the opportunity to transfer unused Cheyenne allocations to Derecho when the new system becomes available.
