Software updates and future changes to defaults

December 2, 2021

New versions of many software packages – including netCDF, HDF5, NCO, CDO, GDAL, R, Singularity, and CMake – have been installed on both Cheyenne and Casper. In addition, new releases of MPT (version 2.25) and Arm Forge (version 21.1.1) have been installed, resolving known bugs relating to collective parallel IO and memory debugging, respectively. The parallel IO bug in MPT affects versions 2.23 and 2.24, which are now considered deprecated, and those modules will be removed in a future update. Users wishing to advance from version 2.22 of MPT should skip directly to 2.25.

CISL is planning updates to module defaults on both systems on December 20. The default Intel version will advance from 19.0.5 to 19.1.1. The default netCDF will advance from 4.7.4 to 4.8.1. The GCC and NVIDIA HPC compilers will have default versions set to 10.1.0 and 21.9. Finally, CUDA 11.4.0 will be added to the default set of modules on Casper.

Further changes to defaults are anticipated in early 2022, including increments to MPT and Open MPI versions.
