Campaign Storage purge policy has been updated

September 21, 2021

CISL has updated the data-retention policy for the Campaign Storage file system and no longer plans to implement an automatic purge of files five years after their creation. Instead, the system is now considered a resource for medium-term storage of project data, typically for three to five years, by NCAR labs and universities that have allocations.

Campaign Storage will not continue to expand at the same rate that it has for the past three years. Its current usable capacity is 65 PB. Depending upon the evolution of storage technology, the usable capacity is expected to plateau at approximately 100 PB - 120 PB within the next few years as old disks begin reaching end of life in late 2023. Users will need to manage their data to make the most efficient use of available space.
