Attend a lecture about European forecast busts

March 23, 2026

On Tuesday, March 31, from 3:30 PM to 4:30 pm  MT, join the Earth Observing Laboratory (EOL) and the Mesoscale and Microscale Meteorology Laboratory (MMM) at NSF NCAR for a joint seminar. The talk is entitled “Medium-Range European Forecast Busts: Characteristics And Variability.”

Kaustubh Mittal from Reading University will examine the frequency and nature of large forecast failures in European weather predictions. Dr. Mittal will provide an analysis of 500-hPa geopotential height forecasts from 2009 to 2023 to demonstrate how these busts are associated with systematic atmospheric flow configurations rather than random events. The session will explore how structural differences between various forecasting systems lead to varying model responses during uncertain atmospheric conditions.

This hybrid event is being held at the NSF NCAR-Foothills Laboratory at 3450 Mitchell Lane, room FL2-1022 (the Large Auditorium). Refreshments will be served at 3:15 PM MT, and remote participants may join via a live webcast to ask questions through Slido.
